DKM Bismarck
by Konley Kelley

3D virtual model of the German Battleship Bismarck May 24, 1941.

Early in WWII, the German battleship Bismarck destroyed the famous British warship, HMS Hood.  This shocking news and the daily bombings of London left the people of Great Britain devastated.  Churchill told the British Navy to do everything in its power to sink the Bismarck.

Although carrier air tactics were brand new and the pilots had very little training, the Swordfish squadrons took off (in horrible weather) to hunt the Bismarck.  The Bismarck had thick hull plating so the torpedoes that did hit did very little damage.  As the Bismarck maneuvered wildly to avoid the torpedoes, its anti-aircraft gunners couldn't hit the slow moving, fabric covered biplanes.

The plane in the picture hit the Bismarck in its rudder while it was turning.  The rudder was jammed at an extreme angle and the Bismarck couldn't keep her course back to the safety of German occupied France. The next day the British Navy caught up to her and destroyed the ship.

Although it was near darkness, all the Swordfish returned safely to their carriers.  It was another chapter in the end of the battleship's dominance of the high seas.

I finally 3D modeled a battleship!  Printed images will make a nice display next to the Tamiya 1:350  Bismarck and Ballad's book (signed I might add) in the nautical-themed bathroom at my home.  My wife's gonna love that.

The models Third pose was inspired by the fifth image a painting of the Bismarck in Action.
