1/200 Battleship Yamato (Gallery)

The Gallery 1/200 Yamato, a kit just made for anyone who loves photo-etch. Minor modifications include: adding scale cable (thin yarn) to the otherwise empty cable reels; sculpting draped canvas from Magic-Sculpt on to the simplistic main and secondary blast bags; scratch building four of the ten single 25mm gun mounts (there should be over 20 single mounts for this time period, the kit supplies ten). The kit is optimized for Yamato’s final voyage, but includes parts to model the ship as built. She is shown here at the time of the Leyte Gulf operation (October, 1944). 99% of the PE comes in the kit. Paint is Tamiya Lacquer Kure Grey, Dull Red (spray) and Model Master enamel deck tan (custom mix). The deck was painted then darkened with black and yellow ochre pastel. Crew (140+ sailors) is from ION Models Set 1: IJN Chilling On Deck, and Set 2: IJN Carrier Personnel and Pilots. Overall detail and fit are excellent. The ship will be rigged as soon as I resupply with stretch nylon thread. The case was constructed from 1/4” plexiglass, 1/2” finished plywood, trimmed and beveled fur 1x4s, and corner moulding. Overall building time was about 13 mounts, with lots of intermittent interruptions. A full build review can be seen here.
