1/350 SMS Grosser Kurfürst (ICM)
A few years ago I built an ICM Kõnig kit as its sister ship Grosser Kurfürst. Since then I have concluded that I prefer my ships waterlined and earlier this year I took the plunge and proceeded to rebuild my model. As usual, the project proved to be much more complicated than I envisioned, as it involved stripping the ship down to the hull, water-lining it and rebuilding it. An Artwox wooden deck was added, and the PE was replaced (a combination of WEM and GMM). 88mm BMK brass barrels were added, as I had already used the larger caliber brass barrels in the original build. Colours are Lifecolor acrylics, rigging is stretched sprue, and the seascape is acrylic gel on a base of thick watercolour paper with a little cotton for the breaking waves.
I was intrigued by the possibility that the Imperial German Navy ships in Jutland had their aft funnels painted red (see link here) to ease recognition, so I opted to depict it like that, as it also adds a much needed splash of colour to the ubiquitous greys.
The model was photographed with a Canon SLR against a background of
a sea & sky poster and I used the Helicon Focus software to provide
full depth of field in the photos. I could not resist redoing an image
in Photoshop as a black-and-white image. As a good friend and fellow MW
member commented, "World War I was in black and white"!
