1/600 HMS Suffolk (Airfix)
This is my take on the classic Airfix 1:600 HMS Suffolk kit, first issued in 1964. It is one kit I never built in my youth, and I was happy to build it now. Some clunky details notwithstanding, I did like the fit and level of detail of the kit, and consider it a good starting point.I used the WEM PE from their destroyers set, Atlantic Models PE for railings, inclined ladders and watertight doors, plus 3D printed primary and secondary turrets by Micromaster. He also provided the ship´s boats. The masts were rebuilt completely using machined brass and generic PE.Bridge and searchlight platform were rebuilt.
The model was primed with Stynylrez primer. Vallejo acrylics were used for the camo scheme, which needed quite some masking. The aircraft markings are from Starfighter decals. The rigging is Albion Alloys .1 mm nickel silver wire and Caenis. The model was weathered using artist´s oils.
The base was made in my usual way, with the wave effects sculpted from extra heavy body gloss clear acrylic gel. The bow wave was beefed up with some cotton wool.
All in all a delightful build!
