HMS York

1/700 HMS York 1941 (Samek)

The model depicts the York as she was in the Mediterranean in 1941.

She had the unusual fate of being hit an Italian explosive motor boat whilst at anchor in Suda Bay, Crete. The blast flooded her boiler rooms and deprived the ship of all electrical power. She had to be grounded to prevent her from sinking.

A submarine was sent from Alexandria to provide her with power so that she could be salvaged but had to turn back after being damaged by bombing.

The York became a focus of attacks by German dive bombers and was too severely damaged to be salvaged.

In the end, she was abandoned and became an object of curiosity for German troops after they had occupied Crete.

Like all the old Samek kits, I found the York of excellent quality. I used some photo etch out of my spares box to complete the model.
