1/350 USS Hancock CV-19 (Gallery)
The Gallery USS Intrepid built as USS Hancock during her 1965-66 Tonkin Gulf cruise with CVW-21. The A3 Skywarriors are additions from Trumpeter. Yellow gear are Gallery modern vehicles modified and backdated. Figures are from North Star. Weathering with pastels. The Hancock modifications included:
- Eliminate the stem anchor hawse opening by filing, filling and smoothing.
- Leave off the fantail gun tubs, and reconfigure the attachment for the vertical drop-line lights.
- Leave off the kit supplied, single starboard side communications pole antenna, and add two new, scratch built antennas and outriggers, one forward and one aft of the island.
- Leave off the antenna dome housing at the aft end of the island. Modify the kit supplied antenna platform, and scratch build new radar antenna array.
- Replace the kit supplied photo etch SPS-49 radar antenna with SPS-43A antenna (GMM).
- Sand off the raised decal/photo etch placement scribe lines on the island for number 11 (both sides) and replace with 19 from the decal morgue. Modify the PE island number lights to match “19” vs “11”.
- Paint the flight deck to match that of Hancock during her 1965-66 Tonkin Gulf cruise. Some of the decal placement scribe lines on the flight deck were used as paint guides, but others were not needed. I opted to leave them in place and paint over them rather than try to fill them.
- Create new decals for CVW-21 aircraft. Cut and fold the wings on the majority of the aircraft. Drop tanks make from scratch.
- Scratch built blast deflector
