1/350 USS Shamrock Bay CVE-84 (Hasegawa)
This is a commission for a friend whose father-in-law served aboard the Shamrock Bay during the summer of 1944. He was a weather man who was dropped off in Panama after a change of tour order to the Pacific Theater. This depicts the ship as it was in the Atlantic with Measure 32 4a. The base kit is Hasegawa's Gambier Bay. I used Flyhawk's Gambier Bay Super Detail kit, along with Veteran Models 5"/38 single gun, Northstar Models MK 51 directors and Master Model 20mm Oerlikon sets. Paint was the Model Master "5 series" colors and a Vallejo Blue Gray for the Measure 20-B horizontal surfaces. The curves on the hull were free-form. Thanks to Synder & Short's plans for the cammoflage, I hope I did it justice. The kit went together well enough, although I sanded down the bow supports and used plasticard to re-brace. Flyhawk's 40mm Bofors cannons went together nicely. Total time was 4 months.
