1/700 IJN Akagi 1941 (Fujimi)
This is Fujimi’s 1/700 kit of the IJN Akagi and the Fujimi PE set. Lion Roar’s Photoetch Flight Deck and several other PE sets from various other vendors were used to help improve the base kit. Getting the Flight deck on this model was a challenge as the deck was designed for the Hasegawa kit and adapting it took time and a lot of planning. The ship went together slowly and has been on and off the workbench for the past two years due to moments of frustration and out of Stock PE sets needed to complete it. Fine Molds Nano Dread Type 96 AA, Master Brass Barrels, and A-Line Chain were used along with several sizes of Evergreen styrene, brass rod and various sizes of fine wire and stretched sprue used to scratchbuild areas and add detail. The hull is painted Tamiya IJN Kure Gray from a spray can.
The wood parts of the PE deck is a base color of generic almond, then
several different watercolor pencils, then light washes of several acrylic
beige's and a sealing of ModelMaster clear lusterless flat. Afterwards
a dark weathering wash was applied over it to bring out the lines between
the planks. I finished it in March of 2013 and the model won First
Place in the Small Scale Carriers category in the August 2013 Colorado
Thin-Air IPMS Nationals.
