1/125 USS McChord DD-530 (Lindberg)

A sure sign of spring....my grandchildren wondering why so few of Grandpa's model ships actually float. So, it was time to refurbish, re-motor, and re-float my Fletcher class DD 530 USS McChord, constructed from the Lindberg  'Blue Devil' Destroyer kit. At their request a few slightly off-scale sailors were put on board. Balsa wood bilge keels were also added so the ship would be more stable, as well as some metal weights. Different plastic gears were also used to make the thing go slower so as to be a bit more realistic. Due to the sloppy fit of the deck to the hull, the ship is definitely a 'smooth water only' affair. But, for the price, versus many up-scale RC boats out there, not to complain. It is fun to sail on the ponds of a friend's garden railroad, where, if need be, we can wade in to rescue it.
