1/700 DKM destroyer Z-9 Wolfgang Zenker (Trumpeter)

This built of another destroyer of the class 1934 wasn’t done for me. A visitor asked me during an exhibition if I would like to build this model as a gift for Christmas, for his father in law, whose father served at Z-9 “Wolfang Zenker” during WW II.

Z-9 “Wolfgang Zenker” was part of the Kriegsschiffgruppe 1 (warship group 1), which was ordered to occupy Narvik (Norway) during the “Operation Weserübung” in April 1940. 10 german destroyers were beaten there by british forces and got lost, Z-9 was sunk at Rombaksfjord by his own crew after depleting the whole ammunition.

Of course I was willing to build another german destroyer, in particular because this family history has some similarities to my own.

The kit is Trumpeter’s no.05793, but with the correct bridge by 3D models (Carl Allsup). The sea was done with a part of Styrofoam, formed with a heater, finished with acrylic gel, clear coat and cotton batting. I built the destroyer nearly out of the box, with only a few additions:

Ø  railing and anchor chains by Flyhawk
Ø  sailors by Eduard
Ø  wooden deck parts (spare from “Prinz Eugen”, Five Star Model)
Ø  rigging with Uschi’s 0,01 mm thread
Ø  a little detailing of the midship’s life boat’s area

For this time I choose the full hull version, according to sculpt the sea a little bit rougher, so I needed the underwater part. Colors by Vallejo and Model Master.

The whole scene was glued into a Trumpeter’s dust case no. 09813 (120x232x86mm).

A very nice little present! Merry Christmas!
