HMS Janus

1/350 HMS Janus (White Ensign)

Here are some photos of my model of the destroyer HMS Janus. It is the 1/350 resin kit by White Ensign.

The mast is replaced with brass rod and plastic and resin figures by L'Arsenal are added. Extra bits of detail have been added to the pom-pom, 4.7" guns and in particular the torpedo tubes, which were rather bland.

The felucca is scratchbuilt, largely from memory of a holiday in Egypt in 1993, and I think the sail ought to have a boom as well as a yard (Oh well, too late now). The tiny rowing boat came from the spares box and is actually 1/700, but with some of the thwarts removed it looks OK.

Apart from the felucca, I'm quite pleased with the activities you can see, the whaler being launched, the crewmen starting to rig the awnings and the arab trader coming aboard uninvited to sell his oranges (or other requisites of a more immoral nature?) and being told in no uncertain terms where to put them!!

If I recall correctly, the paint is mostly Lifecolor acrylic. The rigging is braided nylon cord from carrier bag handles teased out to individual fibres.

The model won Best of Show at the IPMS Scottish Nationals in 2005.
