HMS Savage

1/192 HMS Savage (Scratchbuilt)

This submission of my 1/192 scale scratch built model of HMS Savage is based on the scale plans drawn by John Roberts. The material is wood for the hull and superstructure. Brass and iron were used for small details mainly gun barrels, masts, railings and depth charges. Paints are from WEM and Humbrol.

This ship was one of the "S" group class of emergency destroyers. While the rest of the class were armed with the original designed armaments of 4 x 4.7 in guns, HMS Savage was armed with a twin 4.5in gun on the forcastle deck and the rest of her main armament remained in the original single gun shields but the barrels were exchanged for 4.5's in to facilitate loading, unnecessary duplication of ammunition and lessen the use of unsavoury words not all of which were directed at the enemy. These new weapons proved successful and an improvement on previous ones, so much so, that they equipped the largest class of destroyers, the Battle Class to enter RN service. A model of which I have already submitted to MW. . HMS Savage proved a good sea boat and during the Scharnhorst episode not only keep up with the fleet but was still capable of manoeuvreing for attack. She continued to serve in the navy even post war.

This my third destroyer model in 1/192 scale. For my next submission I am uncertain whether to submit another of my destroyers or present one of my aircraft carriers or battleships for a change.
