I have always felt that the key to making these vessels interesting is the paint job. I spent most of my time painting the Chicora for the sole purpose of making it more interesting to the viewer. After doing some research I came to the conclusion that Confederate vessels were considerably more weathered than their Union counterparts due to the simple fact that they possessed VERY few facilities to maintain their fleet. All vessels carried maintenance personnel to keep the vessels afloat and running, but appearance (paint) must have took a back seat due the lack of facilities. The result (I assume) would be an operational vessel that had a fair amount of rust on the strap iron armor. IMHO, the CSS Chicora is anything but plain looking, but I am somewhat biased.
In construction photos on page two show the kit preparation, and weathering.
