1/600 RMS Mauretania (Airfix)
This is my version of the RMS Mauretania painted as she appeared in
the 30’s prior to scrapping. The kit was the old Airfix kit which
had quite a few fit issues that took some time to correct. I detailed
the kit but adding small carbon fiber rod as the deck supports, drilled
out all the portholes, added Toms 1/600 generic liner/merchant PE rails,
scratched the funnel caps, and since the stairs were too short in the PE
set, I made handrails for the kit stairs out of spare PE. I used
thin copper wire for all the rigging and am reasonably happy with it.
I made the base out of a large picture frame and used acrylic gel medium
painted dark sea blue and glossed with future. Overall a fun build
even with the fit issues and the PE and other details made an inexpensive
kit look very nice.
