K-129 Golf SSBN

1/250 K-129 Golf SSBN (Wilhelmshaven)

This is the 1/250 scale Golf-class submarine in the paper model by Wilhelmshaven. It was a sunken Golf-class sub, the K-129, that was the subject of the famous 1970s covert recovery operation by the CIA and the Howard Hughes owned vessel Glomar Explorer. I recently read the book "Red Star Rogue" which asserts that the K-129 sank (March 1968) during an attempted missile launch at Pearl Harbor, part of a plot by a radical faction within the KGB to incite war between the US and China. A very interesting read...I recommend it to all Cold War submarine fans.

Wilhelmshaven's kit is easy to build but works up into a nice waterline representation of the sub. I used a mixture of Mod Podge and acrylic paint for the water.
