1/350 USS Grayback SSG-574 (Pit-Road)
This is one of the Pit Road Combat Sub series resin kits from the early-2000's.
This was a kit offered on one of the on-line auction sites. I remember
seeing pictures of this submarine in the 1950's because of this unique
bow missile storage hanger. Since it was something different, I decided
to purchase the kit and build the model. The kit was composed of
about 30 resin and white metal parts plus a bag of brass rods. The castings
were excellent requiring only minor clean-up. The instructions are in Japanese;
but, the diagrams provide all the guidance needed to assemble the model.
The kit was basically built "out-of-the-box". I replaced the kit
provided 3-bladed props with correct 5-bladed props (photo-etch left
over from another kit) and detailed the Regulus II missile. The model
was painted in the gray-black scheme using Poly Scale acrylics. This
build took about 25 hours. I am very happy with the result as I now have
a submarine model with the "sleek-looking" Regulus II cruise missile
(In real life, cancelled in 1958 after a few test flights).
