1/72 USS Virginia SSN-774 (Scratchbuilt)
This is a scratch built USS Virginia in "box scale". The model had to fit a 72" long base. The sub is 64" long so it can fit under the cover with a little room to spare. The hull blanks are glued up lifts of basswood and then turned on a lathe. the hull is in three sections with mortise and tenon joints. I can't turn something 64" long in one piece. The three pieces were epoxied together and an oak dowel was put into the joint to hold it securely. Once all of the surface detail was added it was given a coat of auto primer. The paint is Tamiya and the white markings are vinyl.
